The thyroid hormone is secreted by the thyroid gland in our neck. For the secretion of thyroid hormone iodine is required. This hormone affects various parts of our body and is essential for the maintenance of metabolic functions. Lack of iodine causes goiter (swelling of neck due to the enlargement of thyroid gland) and also important for children for their brain development. Children who are born with iodine- deficient many have low intelligent quotient.
High levels of this hormone will also causes several problems which include anxiety, hyperactivity, irregular heartbeats, and an increased appetite. The most common problem associated with thyroid is hypothyroidism, which requires continuous therapy and can be life long. Hypothyroidism occurs if lesser hormones are produced. This disorder may result in constipation, lethargy and swelling all over the body. A person may also get brain and nerve problems.
To identify thyroid disorders, a clinical consultation has to be done. These tests usually include blood levels and the endocrinologist may perform repeated tests until the medicine gets stabilized. It is also believed certain postures of yoga can help in curing thyroid disorders. Eliminating salty and dairy foods from diet would also help.
